Natural Products Training Laboratory

Goal

To establish a hands-on laboratory based training program in the application of state-of-the-art analytical techniques for natural product analysis.

Opportunity

The global dietary supplement industry is in need of uniform scientific standards to support product quality. Analytical testing is the lifeblood of a quality control program. The need exists to offer training courses to scientists, regulatory agency personnel, and quality control and quality assurance personnel in the global dietary supplement industry as well as in other natural product based industries (e.g. agrichemicals).

Strategy

The National Center for Natural Products Research (NCNPR) at the University of Mississippi is partnering with the Waters Corporation to equip a laboratory in the Thad Cochran Research Center with general purpose and specialized analytical testing equipment used in testing of natural products. Hands-on training courses will be offered to participants.

Economic Impact

It is anticipated that 15 attendees will participate in each course offering. Six times a year, the average attendee will stay four nights in nearby hotels. The existence of the Natural Products Training Laboratory should attract industry to consider Oxford for a new site of operations.
